Emergency Medicine Trainees
As physicians-in-training, we can sometimes feel that our contributions in the areas we work at or train are not as important, because such contributions cannot be easily measured. Where do residents and fellows really stand in the health care system; with its rising costs and the public dissatisfaction with the varyin
g differences in the quality of care delivered?

Through the Value-Based Health Delivery (VBHD) course, I learned that there are practical ways to measure the contribution of every member in a health care team, including the contributions of residents and fellows. This way of understanding our value or cost has the potential to allow for better matching of trainees at all levels to tasks they excel at while eliminating or redirecting other tasks to other personnel. This approach can reduce physician burnout, reduce clinical costs and improve patient outcomes.

I am excited to apply the concepts learned through this course especially cost-measuring to projects and future interests. This is such a privilege and great opportunity provided by COE; learning from the most brilliant minds in the field, including fellow trainees. COE provided a enriching space to learn together. Definitely one of the highlights of my fellowship training. I highly recommend it!
